Muharram 1446H

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem and greetings to our beloved Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad

Insya Allah, in just a matter of days, we will bid farewell to 2023. Over the next few days, many of us will find ourselves in a time of reflection. While we will be looking back at our journey of personal growth, overcoming challenges, and celebrating our achievements, let us also reflect on the global incidents that have touched us all, especially those those affecting our ummah from around the world.

For Muslims, no matter how painful life challenges can be, we are encouraged to turn to the teachings of the Quran as our source of strength and wisdom. From gratitude, hardships, appreciation, failures, and success, the Quran is a guiding light, helping us navigate difficult times with grace and resilience. In moments of despair, the Quranic verses have also reminded us that with every hardship comes ease, instilling hope and patience in our hearts.

From a community perspective, we have seen how our faith has sustained us and brought us closer. We’ve been reminded of the importance of supporting one another, whether through community service, humanitarian aid, or simply offering a kind word to someone in need.  Regardless, we must thank Allah SWT for His endless guidance and protection. Let us take the lessons we’ve learned this year as invaluable and that they have taught us to appreciate our blessings, learn from our failures, and celebrate our successes with humility and gratitude.

The Essence of Gratitude in Islam

In Islam, gratitude is not just a passive feeling but an active expression of appreciation for Allah’s blessings. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of being grateful, even in the face of adversity, as mentioned in Surah Ibrahim, Chapter 14, Verse 7:

“Your Lord has decreed that if you are grateful, He will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.” (Quran 14:7)

This verse highlights a fundamental Islamic principle: the importance of expressing gratitude to Allah for His bounties and favors. This teaching encourages believers to maintain a sense of thankfulness in all circumstances, viewing every situation, including hardships, as an opportunity to demonstrate faith and gratitude. This gratitude is not just for the evident blessings but also for the hidden blessings disguised as trials and tribulations. The act of thanking Allah in both ease and hardship is a cornerstone of faith, reinforcing a positive outlook that helps believers remain resilient.

Facing Hardships with Patience and Wisdom

The Quran acknowledges that life will have its share of difficulties and tests. However, it also assures believers that these hardships are opportunities for growth and spiritual elevation. Verses in the Quran remind us that with every difficulty, there is relief as stated in Surah Al-Inshirah, Chapter 94 verse 6

“For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.”

This verse reminds us believers that every difficulty is accompanied by ease, conveying a message of hope and resilience. It encourages patience and perseverance through challenging times, assuring that relief and ease are never far away. It encourages Muslims to face challenges with patience, perseverance, and an unwavering trust in Allah’s wisdom.

Learning from Failures and Celebrating Success

In Islamic teachings, both failure and success are seen as part of Allah’s plan. Failures are not to be viewed as defeats but as lessons and catalysts for self-improvement and spiritual growth. Success, on the other hand, is to be received with humility and as an opportunity to be grateful. This balanced approach prevents despair in times of failure and arrogance in times of success.
